Last Week Tonight, the news satire TV show presented by John Oliver, issued a stark piece of financial advice to US viewers in June 2016. “If you have a [financial adviser], ask if they are a fiduciary. If they say no, run.”
In the almost two years since, the idea of financial advisers being fiduciaries — meaning they have to act in the best interest of their client — has been heavily debated in the wake of a contentious rule from the US Department of Labor.
